Still don't get this EMDR Therapy thing?
EMDR Therapy helps to reduce negative responses to triggers you face today that are associated to a disturbing or traumatic experience in your past, and it moves you towards healing to create a better future.
Through use of bilateral stimulation of the eyes (to mimic REM that occurs in deep stage of sleep), one is able to reach a point of desensitization and decreased reactivity to triggers. Upon reaching the state of calm that is key to effectively processing though the memories, one is able to address the disturbing memory and resolve the experience. The end result is reaching a positive conclusion to the experience.
In my work, I have utilized EMDR Therapy to support my clients resolve past events that linger and manifest as compulsive behaviors, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, grief, and PTSD. These manifestations have negatively impacted them in their relationships, work performance, academic performance, transition into a new chapter in their lives (such as advancing in school levels or parenthood), and decision making in high-stress situations.
I have had the honor of witnessing transformation and growth of such clients as they successfully let go of disturbing memories and associated negative thoughts and feelings about themselves or the world around them.
In the nonjudgmental and validating space of therapy with me, my clients learn to coexist with their experiences. Together with me, they learn that holding on to what previously helped them survive no longer serves them.
