"I am thankful for my struggle because without it, I wouldn't have stumbled upon my strength." Alexandra Elle
Born into a Vietnamese family in the United States, I identify as Vietnamese-American. I learned about my cultural roots and family history through folk story telling and visual imagery introduced to me early on by my parents and elders who fled to the United States of America as refugees. My parents are proudly known as "boat people."
I gained a sense of my own identity in my ethnic studies course work in college when I left my childhood home in the San Gabriel Valley to further explore and push my boundaries in San Diego, CA. It was during this time in my life that I learned how much of my history had informed my voice and story, and then I learned how important it was to go through the process of rewriting my story so that it would come from me and not the first story told to me.
My passion for learning about others, hearing their stories, and playing a pivotal role as a supportive figure stems from much of my own history as a daughter of refugee parents who were in need of that figure during their own resettlement process in a foreign country and culture. I recognize in my own personal and professional journey towards becoming a Clinical Social Worker that we thrive when we feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted despite our current state and struggle. Furthermore, upon discovering our innate goodness and having our truths and our needs validated to be important, we feel empowered to access resources that enable us to not just survive, but to thrive alongside what life hands to us.
Today, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of combined experience helping individuals find their voice to rewrite their stories. My work today is informed by my experiences serving immigrant and refugee communities across California as a community organizer. The irony that a Social Worker who studied to be a community organizer and program developer is now a therapist who passionately works with individuals who seek to heal from traumatic incidents or who seek to strengthen their coping skills to manage life's stressors is not lost upon me. All of those skills that I acquired in my years as a community organizer and program developer now drive my work in my private practice, honed down to the level of the individual sitting before me.
